The evening starts with a pre-screening discussion with Academy governor Gregory Nava and actress Elsa Cárdenas, who marries Dennis Hopper in the film.

This 60th anniversary screening celebrates the life and legacy of Stevens and is presented as part of the George Stevens Lecture Series, established by the Academy in 1981 after Stevens’s personal papers were donated to the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library Special Collections by George Stevens Jr. Included among the George Stevens Papers are Dimitri Tiomkin’s handwritten pencil sketches for the music score for Giant. Tiomkin received a nomination from the Academy for his outstanding music score.
